What are you celebrating today?

1. weirdvis5 March 2011, 9:46 GMT +01:00

Always a popular thread at the other place.

I'll kick this one off.

It was my birthday the other day. I was expecting a bottle of my favourite perfume (I've been dropping hints I was running low) and woke up to a Land Rover Freelander on the drive. I've always wanted a 4x4 and now I've finally got one courtesy of my Mum and my Significant Other Half.

Okay, so it's not a new one and it's not an all singing, all dancing model, but that doesn't bother me. It's a freaking Freelander, dudes!

Mine's a white soft top like the one in the foreground.

Downside - I'll have to fund my own bottle of smellies. Oh hold on - there's Mother's Day coming up...

I don't know whether to congratulate you or hit you, Lynne. Corel bought out PhotoImpact just to destroy it, and I vowed never to use another of their products again. I hate them. I'm sure the program is good, but I'll buy Photoshop if anything else.

John, I'm getting a photo of an older child, and it changes each time I leave the page.

I didn't say I bought Painter, Dez. My Significant Other Half uses graphics software in his job as a CAD engineer and I get to play with them. What I like about Painter, apart from the fact it can do some amazingly realistic digital painting, is that you can save files in Photoshop pdf format and therefore also export them to Illustrator to use as backgrounds. I'm still an Adobe girl at heart. Just like you.

Big grin.

Then all is forgiven, and you may buy me a Christmas gift this year.

125. weirdvis9 June 2011, 12:10 GMT +02:00

Why thank you Dez. I'll send you a Pomgolian beer.

:D

126. xymonau9 June 2011, 14:06 GMT +02:00

And I'll send you the bill for my alcohol rehab. It's a deal.

129. weirdvis9 June 2011, 15:25 GMT +02:00

But Dez, there is no alcohol in ginger beer...

What a cutie ! ;-)

133. xymonau11 June 2011, 9:42 GMT +02:00

John, what a beautiful child! You and Mum are both so good looking, she's going to be a stunner. Lovely photos. Even though I'm old, it makes me all clucky again! LOL

Lynne, there was alcohol in the ginger beer my mother and I once made. We didn't realise it. Then the bottles started exploding in the sunroom where we had left them. We were too scared to go near them, because it was like hearing shell fire in the distance every time one went off! ROFL! My poor father just got home from England, and he was elected to risk life and limb to get them outside. Never again!

134. weirdvis11 June 2011, 10:29 GMT +02:00

Lovely story, Dez. Do you still have the recipe? I won't let the stuff ferment in the conservatory, I promise. :0)

135. xymonau11 June 2011, 11:07 GMT +02:00

You have to have a ginger beer "bug" to get them started. I have no idea where you get that. Someone gave us ours - I think it's probably just the yeasty thing that ferments it. I didn't know that at the time.

Okay - here's one. they call the bug a "plant".

Home-made ginger beer

Chef: Sally Wise

It always fascinated me as a kid that you could grow a living, breathing ginger beer plant by simply mixing up ground ginger, sugar, yeast and water. Here's Sally Wise's take on the topic.

You need:

Yeast, ground ginger, sugar, water.

Plant:

½ teaspoon dried yeast
1 rounded teaspoon ground ginger
1 rounded teaspoon sugar
1 cup lukewarm water

Method:

Mix all together in a jar, cover with a piece of muslin and secure with a rubber band.

Each day for the next week, add 1 teaspoon sugar and 1 teaspoon ground ginger.

The plant: Divide the plant left in the muslin into two halves. Place one of these in a glass jar with a cup of warm water. Then next day start feeding as before, that is, one teaspoon of ginger and one of sugar each day. The other half of the plant can be discarded, or you can have two plants 'on the go'.

To make up the Ginger Beer:

For the syrup, mix together:

4 cups of sugar
24 cups of warm water
½ cup strained lemon juice
then:

Strain the ginger beer plant through two layers of muslin.

Pour the resulting liquid into the syrup and mix well.

Bottle and seal. The ginger beer should be ready to drink by the end of a week.

Dez's advice - use new home brew bottles, not used soft drink bottles like we did. They're too weak, as the resulting brew is fizzy.

Thanks, Dez. I have a collection of demijohns from my other half's home brewing days. I'll sterilise them and give this puppy a go when I find the time and a bit of space.

137. xymonau11 June 2011, 11:38 GMT +02:00

And I'm not paying for YOUR rehab! LOL

138. weirdvis11 June 2011, 15:56 GMT +02:00

I'm betting it won't be as potent as my Mum''s damson gin.

Grin

143. weirdvis13 June 2011, 10:23 GMT +02:00

Never doubted you could do it, Kev. Keep that shutter going.

144. Gramps13 June 2011, 14:13 GMT +02:00

Well done Kevin ! Cracking Gallery.

145. xymonau13 June 2011, 14:36 GMT +02:00

Yes, but you have three images in the top 112 - which I consider the front page. AND you've only got 224 images. Congratulations, Phil!
